By adding honey, natural maple syrup, natural orange juice, ripe banana, or liquid Stevia, the smoothie stays healthy while becoming perfectly sweet.

How Do You Make a Healthy Smoothie?

Healthy smoothie making is so simple!

The process begins with a clean blender, and the process after is customizable based on your taste buds.

Here is a helpful formula that makes for the perfect smoothie, no matter what ingredients you have.

Go by this general rule of thumb:

  • 1 serving of any vegetable
  • 1 serving of any fruit (frozen fruit is ideal for texture)
  • 1-2 servings of add-ins (protein, seeds, Greek yogurt, etc.)
  • 1 serving of liquid
  • Ice (if not using frozen fruit)

The smoothie liquids are what allow your blender to do all of the work, so make sure you have enough liquid to blend, but not too much.

Too much liquid can turn the smoothie soupy, so be mindful when adding your liquids.

You can always add more but not take away!

Some liquids that we love to add to our smoothies are:

  • Unsweetened almond milk
  • All-natural orange juice
  • Water
  • Coconut water
  • Iced coffee
  • Green tea 

After your chosen ingredients are added to the blender, simply blend on high, or the smoothie setting, until smooth and creamy.

Why is Frozen Fruit Ideal for Smoothies?

Frozen fruit is essential for healthy smoothies because it leads to a better texture in the final result.

You can receive a similar texture by using ice, however, adding ice is adding water to your smoothie.

Depending on your machine, the ice may melt quickly as the blender runs.

This can lead to a watery consistency with an inferior flavor.

If you have a new blender, make a few smoothies to get an idea of how warm your machine gets as the motor is running.

Adding ice to a blender that stays cool will produce a nicer texture.

Instead of ice, try freezing your sliced banana overnight before adding it to your smoothie in the morning.
